The Art & Science of Herbarium Making

Learn the art of plant pressing and preservation

with Kris Garnier.



Join us for an immersive journey into the fascinating world of plant preservation and botanical documentation. This hands-on workshop, led by our Herbarium Specialist and Lead Gardener Kris Garnier, combines scientific observation with artistic preservation techniques passed down through centuries.

Workshop Overview: In this four-hour experience, participants will:

  • Learn the rich history and significance of herbariums in botanical science

  • Explore White Feather Farm's diverse landscapes while learning plant identification

  • Practice proper plant collection and preservation techniques

  • Take detailed field notes using naturalist observation methods

  • Examine plant structures using microscopes to reveal hidden botanical beauty

  • Learn mounting and preservation techniques 

  • Create two professional-quality herbarium specimens using archival materials

What to Expect: The morning begins with a brief introduction to herbarium creation, followed by a guided botanical walk through the farm's wild spaces. After collecting and pressing specimens we will settle into the barn for mounting and preservation work with pre-pressed plants. Throughout the workshop, participants will have access to microscopes for detailed plant examination.

  • Suitable for adults and teens 16+

  • No previous experience necessary

For the past 25 years Kris Garnier has been overseeing greenhouses, gardens and indoor plant collections for both businesses and estates throughout the Hudson Valley. She spends her free time learning about plants, where-ever they may be growing, by exploring in the woods, fields, on mountain trails, stream sides, road sides, overgrown lots and even cracks in a sidewalk! Her goal is to offer her enthusiasm about plants to get people on their lifelong path of passion for the natural world around us! Kris has earned a certification in botany through The New York Botanical Garden and is a New York State Licensed Guide, her artwork is sold privately
