White Feather Farm needs an extra hand for the 2024 busy season! 



Position: (seasonal April - Oct/Nov) starting is part time with potential to grow into Full time 

Start date: April 2024

Schedule:

  • ~three days a week to start

  • alternating Thur-Sat and Wed-Fri schedule 

  • two mandatory Saturdays a month (non negotiable) 

Compensation: Hourly, based on experience. $18- $20/hr


We’re seeking to hire one additional seasonal farm worker this 2024 growing season! White Feather Farm is a non-profit organization based in Saugerties, New York. We're a small farm with a mission to be an integral part of our community through food, agriculture, and the arts. Our fruit and vegetable production takes place on about 2 acres of a 65-acre property with a small team. Our outlets consist of an onsite farm stand, wholesale, and donations of what we grow. Ideally, we are seeking an entry-level candidate who is excited to learn about sustainable farming.

Field Workers for our 2024 growing season will be expected to take part in the core aspects of the job, such as chicken coop cleaning, log-grown shiitake mushroom inoculation and harvest, compost and soil building, paddy fields for rice, customer service and sales on market days, and of course plenty of fieldwork (harvest, cultivation, irrigation, etc.). They will also have the opportunity to engage with honey bees, greenhouses and propagation, flower fields, and orchard maintenance under the guidance of the managers of those spaces. Although no previous farming experience is required, an eagerness to learn and an interest in agriculture are helpful.

Farming is a joy, but it can be quite intense. There will be long, hot days where you are bothered by bugs and tasked with planting for hours straight. Please make sure you are prepared for the realities of what a job in agriculture looks like. We will not make anyone work in unsafe conditions such as wildfire smoke or excessive heat. Working in reasonable rain is expected, but you’re always encouraged to communicate your physical needs; they will be respected. We are a close collaborative team, and the ability to give and receive constructive criticism is expected.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Field Work: cultivation with hand tools, hand weeding, trellising, irrigating, amending, bed preparation, planting, harvesting, processing in wash station

  • Propagation: Seeding, watering, potting

  • Chickens: Feeding, watering, collecting/washing/packing/labeling eggs, monitoring. coop cleaning

  • Compost: Compost turning and monitoring.

  • Collaborative Teamwork: Clarity, communication and respect is key.

  • Expectations: Punctuality, flexibility, sometimes short and sometimes long days. Careful task and time management. Employees must be equipped and able to work in reasonable but not dangerous conditions. Proper apparel is important, therefore we provide reimbursement up to $250 for qualified work wear.

Pay:

  • Up to $250 reimbursement for farm gear as a uniform
